Early life: from Menteng to the bass guitar (1949–1969)

Chrisye was born in Jakarta to Laurens Rahadi, a Chinese-Betawi entrepreneur, and Hanna Rahadi, a Chinese-Sundanese housewife from Bogor. He was the second of three sons, with brothers Joris and Vicky. The family moved to Pegangsaan Street in Menteng in 1954, and he grew up singing along to records by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Dean Martin.

After Beatlemania reached Indonesia, his father bought him a guitar, but he chose the bass. He played school events with his brother Joris, with Chrisye on vocals.

Around 1969 Chrisye joined the Nasution siblings' band Sabda Nada as a replacement bassist, and the group was renamed Gipsy. In mid-1973 he went to New York with Gipsy and performed there for almost a year. He returned to Indonesia at the end of 1973, then went back to New York in 1974 with another band, The Pro's.

In mid-1975 his brother Vicky died of a stomach infection, and Chrisye fell into depression. He rejoined Gipsy for an independent project with Guruh Soekarnoputra. The result, Guruh Gipsy, was recorded in 1975 and released in 1976 in a run of just 5,000 copies. Rolling Stone Indonesia later ranked it the second-best Indonesian album of all time.
